ain't no rhyme

I am returning to my social bookmarking-less past until Maciej sorts it so that exports are functional and I can actually move to pinboard (yes, I was still with delicious, yes, I should have moved years ago) - for now, a link dump wherein I reread nothing while releasing a bunch of fandom tabs I have on my browser:

Boom Clap (The Sound of My Heart) by [archiveofourown.org profile] femmequixotic and [archiveofourown.org profile] noe
Harry Potter | Rating: NC-17 | 39, 547 words | Harry/Draco
Summary: Post-war Hogwarts has been energized by its new teaching fellows program. Where once bitter enmity divided the wizarding community, Malfoy and Potter chummily patrol hallways together whilst Granger and Zabini seek lost parts of the castle at McGonagall’s behest and Chang supervises Quidditch when not lecturing in Charms. It’s a veritable wizarding utopia and life is predictable for the first time in years. Which is, of course, when everything blows apart as the result of a drunken dare and Malfoy’s life is ruined beyond his capacity to repair it. Ever. In a million years.
One of my joys this past year has been a slight resurgence in Harry/Draco works - they weren't one of my pairings in the sort of height or golden age of that fandom and pairing, but it was a lot of fun to be discovering the dynamic through new works something like a decade later. I have zero memory of this fic scanning through it, but that means nothing - I often have to get, like, a page into a work before I can tell whether or not I've read it before.

A better man might by [archiveofourown.org profile] lowriseflare and [archiveofourown.org profile] threeguesses
Pitch | Rating: NC-17 | 9,397 words | Ginny/Mike
Summary: The day Mike realizes he’s actively looking for Baker’s ass in the dugout is the day he decides he should probably stop slapping it.
This is like, age gap, and sports culture and gender, and sex and kink, a little. (I think a lot of shit is inherently kinky - from G to NC-17 - and am not using that word as code for BDSM; I can't remember the specifics of any sex scenes in this but I do know that I really liked this fic and I think the sex is pretty integral.)

places to be by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sixthlight
Rivers of London | Rating: PG-13 | 6,314 words | Beverley/Peter, Beverley/Peter/Thomas
Summary: Tolstoy was wrong: every happy family is happy in its own way.
Accidental co-parenting and kidfic with a poly bent. Sixthlight tends to write themes that I care about and write really well; I remember this fic as a delight.

the slow pace of geologic time by [archiveofourown.org profile] westerrnredcedar
Check Please! | Rating: PG-13 | 4,258 words | Alicia, Bitty
Jack looks at her and then puts her luggage down and leans in, grabs her into a full-body hug, right there on the sidewalk, holding her so close. She can’t remember when he last hugged her this hard. “He told his parents. About being gay. About us,” he says into her shoulder. “They were awful.”
It's about that, about Jack calling his mom for help, after, and her supporting her son and his partner, being there for Bitty, physically, and her reflecting on parenthood and time, a bit. It's pretty great.

Pants on Fire by [archiveofourown.org profile] Helenish
Inception | Rating: NC-17 | 15,169 words | Arthur/Eames
"Ah," Yusuf says, lifting a reproving hand, "are we calling less than 24 hours of memory loss amnesia now?"
Excellent use of tropes - there's almost a secret identity component with the amnesia - and character and relationship exploration.

Easy Open by [archiveofourown.org profile] Helenish
Mission Impossible | Rating: R | 6,262 words | Benji/Ethan
"So you and Hunt are a package deal these days,” Bryson says.
“Uh,” Benji says, jerking his head up from his computer, ballpoint in his mouth.

I did not expect to like this and buy this pairing but this story was compelling for me.

Desperado by [archiveofourown.org profile] fightingarrival
Star Wars | 3:06 | Poe/Finn/Rey
Summary: There ain’t nothing here for me anymore, but I don’t want to be alone. (A WisCon 41 premiere)
I'm not anywhere near finished processing this vid, so I have nothing on this.

Of Hangovers and Coffee by [archiveofourown.org profile] Madlyie
Les Miserables | Rating: G | 1,514 words | Enjorlas/Grantaire
Summary: prompt: “accidentally broke into your apartment because i was drunk AU”; You would actually expect Grantaire to wake up in an unknown apartment but things don’t always happen like expected.
I don't know that I actually finished reading this, I think I got about a paragraph in and went No! This is not the BNL song AU that I need in my heart of hearts and kind of want to write now and I need to hold onto this fic because it has inspired me.

be yourself my ally by [archiveofourown.org profile] imperfectcircle
Wonder Woman | Rating: G | 15,531 words | Etta/Diana
Summary: “That’s all very flattering,” Etta says when Diana has finally run out of steam, “but surely you have more qualified candidates than me?”
“You are of the world of men.” Diana looks a little embarrassed. “But not a man.”

-- Diana and Etta go back to Themyscira.
I think there's a thing, sort of, where we are, all of us, Darcy Lewis. I think we are also all Etta Candy, and, you know, that's a pretty fantastic vicarious experience in this fic. There's a a fake relationship in this fic. There are rituals and festivities. A+ I mean, there's also some world building if you're into that kind of thing, but I am basically entirely *chinhands* about Etta and Diana dating and the tropes here. (There are kittens in this! There are, like, alien shenanigans. It is fantastic.)

Resource Sharing by [archiveofourown.org profile] rsadelle
James Bond | Rating: NC-17 | 3,476 words | Q/Alec/James, Q/Alec, Q/James
Summary: Q experiences what it means when James says he and Alec share everything.
I remember this basically as filthy porn. Tags include d/s and double penetration.

World Ain't Ready by [archiveofourown.org profile] idiopathicsmile
Les Miserables | Rating: PG-13 | 185,796 words | Enjorlas/Grantaire
Summary: Enjolras presses his lips together. He already looks pained, and Grantaire hasn't even opened his mouth yet. That's got to be a record, even for them.
"I need a favor," he says at last.
"With what?" says Grantaire. "Ooh, are you forming a cult? Can I join? I'd be awesome at cults, I just know it." He ticks off his qualifications on his fingers. "I love chanting, I look great in robes—"

(High school AU. Grantaire the disaffected stoner is pulled into a cause bigger than himself. Or: in which there are pretend boyfriends for great justice.)
Yeah. It's exactly what it sounds like. The really long high school fake dating AU with pining and miscommunication and all of the teenaged things, basically. Solid supporting cast business with other story lines.

Penetration Testing by [archiveofourown.org profile] Toft
Person of Interest | Rating: NC-17 | 8,886 words | Harold/John
Summary: The CIA wants to know what Harold Wren is building for Nathan Ingram, so they set a honey trap. They bait it with John Reese.
God, this fic is basically what I love about John Reese as a character, and makes me want to write meta about kink, and here I definitely mean with reference to d/s. He's like the murder sub? And he just wants to be taken care of and loved and challenged?

The Real Thing by [archiveofourown.org profile] sevenfists
Hockey RPF | Rating: NC-17 | 34,892 words | Evgeni/Sid
Sitting at the table was Sid: Sid as Zhenya had first known him, almost a decade before: dorky, long-haired Sid, his cheeks round with baby fat. He couldn’t have been older than twenty, and even that was generous.
“Wow,” baby Sid said. “Are you
Evgeni Malkin?”
I think the thing that got me with this fic - it's a pretty typical set-up and hockeyrpf loves themselves some age-regression - was the relationships that the present day Sid and Geno have with the time traveler. There's some tension, and a very real vulnerability that the younger Sid has because of his age that's I think really present in his relationship with Geno at this time and adds another layer to their interactions, as well as the interactions that Sid has with his younger self; I think it's a really interesting exploration of the sort of vulnerability of youth in this fic, and also power dynamics in relationships to some extent, and the dynamics of relationships in general and the tensions that exist in them, even when you are on even footing.

Under Yellow Moons by [archiveofourown.org profile] skoosiepants
Teen Wolf | Rating: PG-13 | 17,127 words | Derek/Stiles
Summary: They stare at each other, half-grinning, and Derek knows it’s definitely the absolute wrong time for this, but he wants. He wants to grin at Stiles over dinner every day for the rest of his life, baffled over yams and Moon Pie Day, and, god, crap, goddamn, when the fuck did he have time to fall in love?
Or
The life and times of Deputy Stiles and Supernatural Foster Dad Derek Hale
Some day I need to talk about how much I love skoosiepants, like, coding those italics just then made me so happy, and there's a kind of bandom style to her work, which is just fun - I've been enjoying this adult human Stilinski-Hale business she's been getting up to lately.

So that's my tabs cleared out, and, like step one in catch-up - I owe a few people some things I need to finish sorting.

Love is the answer.

So I'm sending Valentine's cards to anyone who wants one.

I have extra that I bought this year, and also envelopes and watercolour paper and paint and pens and pencil crayons, so I will also take art prompts*, though I guarantee, like, nothing about that fill. (I might take a sideways turn and sketch you a dragon instead of a person or write a drabble or send you a mix instead of doing that visual art thing.)

If we are not mutuals on dreamwidth you are likely getting something without a return address from me, and if, you, too, would like to retain an aura of mystery - I've enabled anonymous asks on my tumblr so you can send me your address there. (A non-anonymous dreamwidth message is another option.) Anonymous or not, I won't keep a digital copy of your address and unless we start up a correspondence I won't keep a paper copy, either.

*I'm doing my Femslash February thing right now so prompts about men are likely to be interpreted as fandom prompts or a character type - I don't make or consume fanworks about men in February

...and those are the technical deets, I think. Let me know if there's a thing I've forgotten or something else.

I am excited to do a productive thing that is not communicating with government and is happy and slightly silly and joy spreading. I also really need to do art things because art is good for me and an outlet - when I start art-ing in areas of my life where it's not really called for that's a sign, I think.

I also really love Valentine's Day, because I run that the way I want to, basically, so: love letters or fan art or flowers or cards for friends and whatever I want. Generally I tend to celebrate it in the same spirit I did when I was six. I do what I want and it makes me happy. It's nice; I recommend it.

Last year was the first fannish Valentine I've sent, I think - there was a store bought card that I had to add supplementary fanart to and then sign as a fictional character. I spent a lot of time giggling, I think.

So, yep: love and joy and Valentine's Day! Let me know if you want to be on my mailing list for that this year and drop me an ask or send a dreamwidth message with your address and maybe an art prompt. (I won't do dudes but I may have some hunks of Canada pin-up art postcards around, and I will do international mail.)

Snowflake Challenge: Day Six

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

01. Go and vote for Marie-Philip Poulin for Captain for the 2017 Canadian Women's Hockey League All Star Game: HERE. Tell me about it, maybe?

Marie-Philip Poulin is sometimes called the Sydney Crosby of women's hockey, because she's a two time Olympic gold medal game-winning-goal-scorer for Canada, and she's good. I feel like game winning goals are kind of her thing, along with being just a fantastic person in general?

Like, she just seems like she has a good sense of humour and is kind of a French Canadian dork and also this fucking amazing role model of a human being:

Here is:
a gifset in which Poulin is doing that role model thing
a gifset of some of her on ice encouragement
a a photo of her tackling an ex teammate (I think) into a foam pit at the winter classic a year ago
a gifset of Pou on ice fails, basically

Marie-Philip Poulin is great, and I want to watch her make terrible jokes as she picks out her all star game team roster or try to steal all the goalies or be super casual and relaxed about the whole thing, because that seems like a her thing to do. And I want to watch her take the ceremonial puck drop at centre ice in the ACC and skate around there with a "C" on her chest.

You can vote every 24 hours until Thursday February 2, and anything helps and is amazing.

02. Meta on Reccing. Especially before 2003 and after 2013, and especially on non-journal platforms, though anything is good.

I have a project in my back pocket that involves compiling a lot of meta on reccing. Those "especially"s are where I have fewer links and where help would be really useful.

03. Tell me about a femslashy thing you love.

I love to hear what people are interested in and excited about, and femslash is love. ♥

These are my favourite* tropes// I know you like them, too//If you get a new fandom

...It should be this one
(I can't believe I ran out of characters in a dreamwidth title. Anyway. Yeah, there was a period when I was making this where I was listening to that song a lot for another project. I'm not sorry.)
*A more accurate title would be something like "Wherein [personal profile] kiki_eng attempts to lure people into bandom by way of tropes." You know you're weak to this. Don't even front.

THESE FEELINGS ARE SO UNEXPECTED
Songs About Vikings by [archiveofourown.org profile] skoosiepants
Panic! at the Disco | Brendon/Spencer | Rating: PG-13 | 2,223 words
The fifth time Brendon jerks off to a guy, he calls up Shane and says, "Spencer Smith's beard made me gay."
Spencer Smith's beard gave me feelings? I'm not sure what else you need to know. I like to pretend that I am not constantly reccing [archiveofourown.org profile] skoosiepants' work, but I probably already have written somewhere on my journal, about one of her fics: cute, fun, funny, I wanted to curl up in it and live there forever, a cat in a sunbeam, eternally happy. Would recommend. Am recommending.

ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE FIC
Pluck All Your Silly Strings by [archiveofourown.org profile] jocondite
Panic! at the Disco | Brendon/Spencer | Rating: PG-13 | 5,047 words
Summary: Brendon and Spencer get secretly married for Sinister Tax Purposes.
I am sorry, but that is the best reason to get married. I feel, in my heart of hearts, that at its heart, that is what marriage is for. So, it's like, please, tell me about how you are so married this seemed like a plan. [archiveofourown.org profile] jocondite does. It's good.

SEX POLLEN FIC
Ask Yourself What Matters by [personal profile] formerlydf
Bandom | Gabe/William | Rating: NC-17 | 11,000 words
There's a voice inside his head telling him that this is Bill, this is Bill in pain, he should be there, he should try to make it better, he shouldn't leave Bill alone, and there's another voice reminding him of how much Bill likes his privacy, that he should respect the few intact boundaries they have left.
I love fic that's interested in consent and feelings. I also love fic that takes a trope that's a path to a pwp and goes somewhere else. So, yes, read all about that time Gabe didn't fuck William in a hotel room.

BONDAGE FIC
Pushing the Boundaries by [archiveofourown.org profile] airgiodslv
Bandom | Gabe/William | 11,946 words | PG-13 | Ableist language: "lame"
“This isn’t exactly what I thought you had in mind when you said retreat, bro,” Gabe comments, fingers digging into muscle just enough to make William’s shoulders rise.
Friendly bondage turns into sexy bondage, gradually. This is pretty domestic; they're so comfortable with each other.

AGE GAP SCHOOL AGE VET AU
Tongue-tied And Overloaded by [archiveofourown.org profile] skoosiepants
Bandom/Disney RPF | Gabe/William | Rating: PG-13 | 7,926 words
So, whatever, William’s young, and nervous – and Gabe kind of scares the shit out of him – but he’s not going to let that stop him from seducing Gabe. Again.
This fic is: fuzzy animals and waiting to get older and get noticed. (Also, yes, apparently I am not trying very hard to pretend that I do not always rec [archiveofourown.org profile] skoosiepants. The Disney RPF crossover is an essential lure, okay? It's fucking magic.) There are shenanigans and teenage insecurity and it's all thoroughly adorable.

HP FUSION VEELA SOULBONDING FIC
I Show Not Your Face by [livejournal.com profile] formerlydf
The Academy Is.../Panic! at the Disco | Jon/William | Rating: PG-13 | 21,919 words | Ableist language: "lame"
It's not awkward — mostly, Jon thinks, because he doesn't spend too much time thinking about it, and he doesn't think William does, either. It's what happens, when you tour. Not with everybody you meet, obviously, but it's just a generally known fact that the more time you spend with somebody, the greater your chances of sleeping with them while under the influence of some sort of alcohol.
This may actually be my favourite HP Fusion ever. It's like bandom's magical realism thing on a series of tour buses that have been transformed into the Burrow and there's pining and werewolves. So: fucking lovely cobbled together magic with the soul of a poet and a note of tension strung through.

FRANK IS A MOTHERFUCKING WEREWOLF
Run by [livejournal.com profile] mrsronweasley
My Chemical Romance | Frank/Gerard | Rating: NC-17 | 60,000 words | Ableist language: "lame"
Summary: Being a secret teenage werewolf is hard. Frank should know. He is one. (written for werewolfbigbang)
The tone of this thing is great. There's something perfect about a teenaged werewolf and this does a really good job on following through on the whole teenaged part.

IS THE TITLE A KNITTING INSTRUCTION/PUN? YES, YES, I THINK IT IS. POLY KNITTING AU, MOTHERFUCKERS.
sl1 k2tog psso by [personal profile] carleton97
My Chemical Romance | Bob/Frank/Jamia | Rating: NC-17 | 9,100 words
"You really are a big softie, aren't you?"
"Shut up and finish crocheting your Cthulhu, Gerard."

Bob owns a knitting shop and Jamia and Lyn set up a sex shop next door. Everyone knits a lot and Jamia and Frank decide they want to keep Bob forever. I mentioned the poly knitting AU thing? (Bonus little old ladies and cooking classes.)

HIGH SCHOOL AU WITH ADORABLE MISUNDERSTANDINGS
Different Pages of the Same Name by [livejournal.com profile] finkpishnets
The Like | Z/Annie | Rating: PG | 2,171 words
Annie won’t admit it aloud but she’s sort of ridiculously glad for the start of senior year.
Adorable. Cute and lovely. Features friendship and people being awkward about having feelings and that thing where getting to know your crush is sweetly complicated instead of straightforward. Obliviousness is also a thing and it's just pretty damn sweet all round.

PSEUDO-HISTORICAL ARRANGED MARRIAGE AU
All the While You Hold the Key by [livejournal.com profile] wordslinging
My Chemical Romance | Frank/Gerard | Rating: R | 10,573 words
Because what you really want to read about is Frank struggling to hide his sickly disposition and Gerard having architectural schemes and them both being gone for each other, and, like, insecure and noble and shit.

HIGHSCHOOL DRAMA CLUB AU
Hurricane and Fire Survival Guide by [archiveofourown.org profile] softlyforgotten
Bandom | Greta/Victoria | Rating: PG-13 | 25,508 words
Summary: Victoria Asher goes to school, stars in a play, and falls in love.
Fuck yes, this fic. It's about Victoria being a bit of an asshole and caught up in her own shit, and there's a drama club. Oh, is there drama club; A+ use of drama club. The summary could also have been: wherein Victoria pines for her old friends and makes new ones in spite of herself. It's great.

SUPERNATURAL COP AU
Take Your Breath Away by [archiveofourown.org profile] cest_what
The Like | Annie/Laena | Rating: PG-13 | 2,951 words
Summary: When Annie got her police badge she didn't think she'd spend her first supernatural incident running for her life. But you can't fight a breath-stealer.
I am not really clear on how this thing manages to be both gritty and adorable, but that is a thing this urban fantasy AU does. Laena is totally swoon-worthy in this and Annie's still new at this job; they fight crime.

UNDERCOVER COP AU
Let Me Shake Up Your World by [archiveofourown.org profile] paperclipbitch
Bandom | Greta/Victoria | Rating: PG-13 | 5,715 words
Pete says that her skills at lying are what make her so invaluable as an undercover officer. Victoria thinks that they probably make her a sociopath.
This is based on a Cobra Starship music video, so Greta and Victoria are working on shutting down a drug operation based out of a club. I love how this thing goes down between them from a trope standpoint. Victoria is great in this.

"CASUAL" SEX AND PINING
Highway Lines and Interstate Signs by [archiveofourown.org profile] AirgiodSLV
Bandom | William/Travis | Rating: NC-17 | 18,791 words
“This is a tour,” Travis replies easily. “Stop packing, you’ve got five days still. Take a vacation. I’ll see you on Warped.”
I put this fic into my draft for this entry a long time ago and so my notes from, like, five years ago, probably, are: "William is made of pretty and feelings" which seems like a pretty promising thing for a tour fic about sex and pining. Also I am pretty sure I do not remember this fic that much because I ended up, like, sucker-punched with the ferocity of how much I shipped those two, so you know it was good.

BASEBALL AU
Take That Fork in the Road and Wherever It Goes by [archiveofourown.org profile] roebling and [archiveofourown.org profile] roebling & [archiveofourown.org profile] stele3, respectively
Panic! at the Disco | Brendon/Spencer | Rating: PG-13 | 17,164 and 20,545 words
Welcome to caring intensely about baseball. I read the sequel first and it is basically the story of a single game of baseball with a lot of memories thrown in, and, I got so invested, in Spencer's feelings and how much the game he was pitching meant, and, yeah. I'm not over it. The first one is a bit more a college AU than a baseball story, but I absolutely recommend both, and if you are emotionally invested in Ngozi's Check Please you will probably be pretty happy with this whole thing - read it even if you're not, maybe. There is angst and pining here, too, and being a closeted pro athlete, and it is a beautiful mix of things that you need in your life.

"THE HOUSE IS ALIVE! *BEAMS*"
Taken My Place by [livejournal.com profile] harborshore
My Chemical Romance | Mikey/Ray | Rating: PG-13 | 6,000 words
The house is old. Really, the house is practically ancient; it groans and complains when the fall storms come calling, and the shed in the garden is holding itself together through sheer will and the last rusty nails clinging to the walls.
This is charming and adorable and Ray and Mikey are roommates in a house that is old and cranky and everything sorts itself out. ♥ I fucking love magic domestic fic.

So that's it, apparently: 16 tropey fic recs painting nowhere near a complete picture of bandom, its characters, ships, or ficcers - like, seriously, one of my main pairings is not in this and I don't know how that happened and this list is so short. I started writing this for [personal profile] readbystarlight years ago and accidentally lured her into other fandoms as I was writing this, but: now is a good time to be in bandom, I feel. It is always a good time to be in bandom. You should join me. *nods*

stronger than

01. Your Mother by [personal profile] ghost_lingering
Saga | R | 1:27 | Alana & Hazel
Audio: If I Should Have A Daughter by Sarah Kay

This is a really engaging comics vid that packs a really strong emotional punch. The source is a still medium and it's set to spoken word, and it moves and pulls you in, and just might make you cry. It's about love and strength and unrelenting optimism in the face of terrible things.

02. L.E.S. Artistes by [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
Terminator Movies | R | 3:30 | Sarah Connor
Summary: Sarah Connor. To tell it straight, I'm trying to build a wall.
Music: L.E.S. Artistes - Santigold

The story of the Terminator films, about Sarah's voyage, fighting the darkness with all you have, and hammering yourself into a weapon in the fire. This vid hurts a bit - there's a kind of rawness to it, well-executed.

03. Hammerhead by [personal profile] such_heights
Doctor Who | PG | 3:34 | Martha Jones
Summary: Prove 'em wrong, girl.
Music: A Brand

A vid about Martha fighting, and shining, and winning. I love Martha so much, and this reminds me why, with her facing down everyone's shit, and always carving her path and making friends. Martha Jones talks to people and she listens and she fights, and she saves the world, and herself. This vid captures her perfectly.

04. Rescue by [personal profile] cosmic_llin
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries | PG | 3:46 | Phrynne, Dot
Summary: We don't need no rescuing, we're ok.
Song: Rescue by Yuna

Phrynne faces the world fearlessly and Dot faces her fears; it's a vid about them and all the women of the Phyrnne Fisher verse facing things down and being there to support each other as they do, in good and bad times. This is such an uplifting vid.

Snowflake Challenge: Day Two

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

This book basically ate my brain when I read it as a kid and I became thoroughly obsessed with it. It consumed me, basically, in a good way - it sparked a lot of creativity and some of my early independent writing had its roots in that book's style, sensibilities, and humour.

Looking back on it, I think one of the greatest gifts it gave me was its characters, especially Morwen.

Cimorene showed me that I could have my own adventures, they didn't have to look like anyone else's, and I didn't have to fit in at home to be happy; I could find my own place. That was a really valuable thing to have, and to have pre-puberty, I think.

Morwen, though, was who I wanted to grow up to be. She was magic and clever and lived alone with a bunch of cats and she was happy. She kept her house neat and tidy, exactly how she liked it, was a skilled baker and ciderer, and was working on organising her library. She put up barriers to keep crap from entering her life (none of this nonsense, please).

I think Morwen let me grow up imagining a future for myself where being by myself and living by myself and doing the work I wanted to do was an option, and that option a given.

She introduced me to witches as independent women with deep lives, strong friendships, and morals. You could probably write a strong meta piece about Kazul, Morwen, and Cimorene - a dragon, a witch, and an improper princess - living outside the bounds of polite society and facing down the patriarchy (wizards): feminism and fairy tales in the enchanted forest and mountains of morning.

Morwen made me want to be a witch when I grew up, and she set me up pretty well for meeting the witches of the Discworld - and feminist texts for that matter. ...and you know what? I've got two feet on the ground, know I'm never going to fly on a broomstick, have been filing taxes for years, and I still want to be a witch.

Snowflake Challenge: Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

(reconciliation)
This is a rec set I made for [community profile] snowflake_challenge last year, on a fannish trope I love. These are some of my favourite stories in general, and reading them I feel like they sink into my bones; they're all really satisfying for me and I'm really happy to have recced them together. (recced: 3 bandom fic, 1 hp, 1 tsn)

SGA, Harry Potter (were you ever in HP?)
I did a December meme last year, shifted and made into a Second Half of January meme - the title was a prompt that was given to me, and I wrote a rec set/playlist of 10 vids in those two fandoms. It's kind of about home and scary things and standing strong and going fuck it - so, life, basically, and some of the major themes in those two fandoms.

"Femslash! Now that you brought it up :D"
Another prompt from the second half of January theme. This post is half rambling meta about representation as a queer woman and half recs. (6 fics: bend it like beckham, bandom, pitch perfect, glee, merlin, elementary and 2 vids: grey's anatomy, xena) It's a pretty messy entry in some ways. Femslash and representation both mean a lot to me; I have a lot of feelings about stories.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge needs volunteers to run this year

[community profile] snowflake_challenge is a posting challenge that runs annually for the first fifteen days in January. Some of the challenges are fannish in nature, some of them aren't, but they're all designed to be as do-able as possible for people and to encourage expression and creativity and caring and happiness, basically. It's a super-chill challenge, you do as much or as little as you like.

The mods are fantastic. In addition to posting a new challenge each day, they also post a ton of comments on the participants posts - the "I did it!" posts that they make on the comm and the post that they made on their journal or tumblr. The mods do an amazing job at setting a tone of encouragement and enthusiasm throughout the challenge and I've had some really great interactions as a result of the challenge and that tone.

I'm going to be so sorry to see it go, if it does, because that's the thing: it is a lot of work to run a challenge like that and they can do it because they have a team of multiple people trading off and making schedules behind the scenes, I imagine. This year has been a year of changes for a lot of people, though, and a lot of the old mods can't run the challenge this year, so they need new people.

So, if you've loved this challenge, or are excited about the idea of it, I encourage you to help out however you can - spreading the word or volunteering.

This year has been fairly crap for a lot of people in many ways, and, I kind of think of [community profile] snowflake_challenge, as, like, an extended More Joy Day. We could use some more joy this coming year, I think.

(The official how to help post is here. Yes, there are three links to the same post in this entry.)

Today.

I stayed up until just about the end, last night, around fifteen minutes before they called it, and so I have gone through the day with too much to do on too little sleep. I felt like I was going to a funeral, heading out this morning.

Today I have been frustrated and angry and sad. I feel threatened. I feel that we are beginning a very difficult time and that there is so much potential for evil - for greed, for oppression, for violence, for atrocities. I am wary of what will happen in the United States of America and what may spill over, and I think that is sort of where we need to be. Wary. Aware.

We need to be watching and I think that we need to be very aware of the past as we do that, and of the sort of things that have come to pass when this kind of rhetoric has been spoken. And we need to be ready to say "no" and "never again".

I think there are many different faces of resistance, and we have seen that, in history.

I think that pervasive fear and anger can be like gasoline and I think it can smother freedom and goodness.

I think that there is a place in all of this, for those of us that can manage it, for radical kindness, and to fight evil with good; I think that this is part of resistance.

I've been remembering today, Jack Layton's words of over five years ago:

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful, and optimistic. And we'll change the world."

I think we need some of those things, today. I think it is easy to forget they exist, today. (I've needed those words, today.)

I think that we need to prepare for the worst, but make the world we try to build not be shaped by fear, despair, and anger. We need to keep fighting.

Journalism

The Agenda did a piece this week on a documentary, All Governments Lie, and the issues surrounding that film - it's about journalism and one journalist in particular: I.F. Stone. The piece is: Failure of the Fourth Estate. One of the things that the panelists seem to agree on is that independent journalists are, because of the compromised state of mainstream American media at present, in a sort of golden age; that there is a lot of independent journalism happening right now because there is a place for it, because of the way corporate media outlets are failing to report and investigate.

John Oliver did a piece on the decline of the newspaper industry a month ago - Journalism - where he talked about the importance of investigative reporting and the economic pressures that are leading and have led to its decline. (There's a skit about covering a cat raccoon news story in it. Hilariously, the day after I watched this The Toronto Star had a teaser for an article about an albino raccoon front page, above the fold.)

F/F Films I watched in February‏ and also Deadpool, in Brief

[personal profile] calvinahobbes and I decided to watch Fried Green Tomatoes the first week in February and then I kind of watched a bunch more films that feature queer women - I go through phases with media. (It's a thing.) I started writing this post after watching Jenny's Wedding and not really having the reaction I was expecting.

I also saw Deadpool opening weekend here, and I do not think I have ever been made so happy by a cartoon boner in my life; boners for everyone is pretty unambiguous. I feel it might actually be less ambiguous than a scene containing something along the lines of "Hello, my name is Wade Wilson and I am pansexual," because I feel like there is a strong desire within certain subsets of the comic book community to erase that sexuality, and that while someone might go "Ha, ha, what a funny word, 'pansexual', what a kidder, that Deadpool," that is basically the audience who's gonna get the message about his sexuality in the film's ending. So: yay, cartoon hammering home the queerness, and yay representation. ♥ The film lived up to expectations for me, going beyond in some ways, and was enjoyable if not a favourite.

The F/F films I watched in February were kind of hit or miss.

Fried Green Tomatoes 1991, USA (English) - "A housewife who is unhappy with her life befriends an old lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know."
Comments )

Jenny's Wedding 2015, USA (English) - "Jenny Farrell has led an openly gay life - except with her conventional family. When she finally decides to start a family and marry the woman they thought was just her roommate, the small, safe world the Farrells inhabited changes forever. They are left with a simple and difficult choice - either change with it or drown."
Comments )

I Can't Think Straight 2008, UK (English) - "A 2008 romance film adapted from a same name novel about a London-based Jordanian of Palestinian descent, Tala, who is preparing for an elaborate wedding. A turn of events causes her to have an affair and subsequently fall in love with another woman, Leyla, a British Indian."
Comments )

The Perfect Family 2011, USA (English) - "A devoutly Catholic wife and mother has been nominated for one of the church's top awards. She then goes about trying to prove she has the 'perfect' family, refusing to accept them for who they are."
Comments )

The Baby Formula 2008, Canada (English) - "Two adventurous women in love are desperate to have their own biological child. They take a chance on an experimental scientific process and make sperm from their own stem cells. Pregnant with humor and unexpected twists, their journey ultimately confirms that all life is a gift and all families are crazy."
Comments )

Bessie 2015, USA (English) - "The story of legendary blues performer, Bessie Smith, who rose to fame during the 1920s and '30s."

Vic + Flo ont vu un ours 2013, Canada (French) - "Vic + [Flo] Saw a Bear is a darkly mysterious tale of [two lesbian] ex-cons, Victoria and Florence, trying to make a new life in the backwoods of Quebec. Seeking peace and [quiet], the [couple slowly] begin to feel under siege[...]"

Susan | G | 4,042 words
Summary: Susan Pevensie goes to Middle Earth
Let’s talk about a Susan who never moved on, who buried her family in English soil and spent the rest of her life trying to find her way home. She did not believe lions were kind, but she always remembered a bow in her schoolgirl hands. She looked in every old wardrobe she came across. It was casual, everyday– the first day in a new lecture hall, she checked the back of the coat closet. Friends had her over for Christmas dinner and she excused herself to go the bathroom, checked every cabinet and closet, and then headed back in for pudding. She went home with a cute boy she met in a smoky little pub and she checked his wardrobe before she headed home the next morning, heels in hand.

Part agonising, part defiant, part hopeful.

She's a Rebel

[personal profile] cosmic_llin is taking suggestions for vids about revolution, and is especially interested in less known or non-Western stories.

I went looking through my bookmarks, and 12/14 of the vids I came up with on my first run-through featured women. Since my fannish roots are actually m/m slash I feel this is a pretty significant percentage. I didn't really notice, actually, what a large number of them were about women, but I watched a chunk of them in quick succession and one of them is a baseball vid I recced earlier this month by [personal profile] trelkez - it's called Revolution and is about a women's baseball team, on the surface at least.

One Girl Revolution by [personal profile] arefadedaway and She's a Rebel by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls are multifandom vids. [[personal profile] thingswithwings wrote some interesting meta, ladies (en masse) are awesome, about that particular genre in 2011.] ...and then there's [personal profile] kuwdora's SG-1 vid about Vala Mal Doran vid, Just a Girl.

SG-1, so, evil empire: check ...and Vala's generally a shit-disturber, so it made the list of vids to check out, and then I watched it. The No Doubt lyrics are pretty intense: "this world is forcing me to hold your hand, because I'm just a girl, little ol' me, well don't let me out of your sight" and "don't let me have any rights, oh, I've had it up to here." The vid ends with a shot of Vala about to burn at the stake, a shot of her in a kitchen, followed by a clip of her finishing up a fight and punching a man's lights out. (It reminds me of [personal profile] kuwdora's Hook Shot, which is a multifandom vid with a lot of punching, and ends with a girl shooting the camera out.)

Watching all of those female-centric vids about revolution have made me wonder. Is the act of being female an act of revolution? Does existing, as a woman, mean that whatever you do, you're going to occupy space that someone thinks isn't yours? Do we have a vidding canon that supports something along those lines?

There's a lot of speculative fiction on the fandom list for those 14 vids, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that reality is by far the scariest source material out there, because, look, there's a reason we have all these vids about women fighting oppressive regimes.

Les stars de Montréal: Les Canadiennes

Les Canadiennes are a team in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) and they are my favourite. Here's some of the why:

My team is better than your team; the Stars have had the most Clarkson Cup wins and have finished the regular season at the top of the league standings, ahead of Calgary by 8 points. They have the second fewest penalty minutes in the league (earlier in the season they had the fewest and were second in the standings) with only Boston having fewer this season.

Kind of amusingly it's Montreal's Karell Emard who is tied with Rebecca Vint of the Brampton Thunder for having the most penalty minutes in the league, though. Emard picked up 14 of those 42 minutes against the Brampton Thunder on January 7th; I actually haven't seen that game but kind of have the impression that this was maybe in reaction to the more penalty-rich game that the Thunder plays.

4/5 of the league's point leaders are Canadiennes, with Marie-Philip Poulin at the top. That might be a name you recognise. She's kind of a big deal. She's a two time Olympian and was responsible for the gold medal goal in both games - actually she scored 4/5 of the Canadian goals in those games, so some people call her the Sidney Crosby of women's hockey, but, I feel she is so much more awesome than he is that this comparison is somewhat sad.

People in the CWHL are pretty awesome in general, especially Les Canadiennes. I mean, they have Julie Chu. Everyone loves Julie Chu - we made her our all-star captain this year and that's a title open to every all-star player so that's some stiff competition. ...and that was a fantastic choice, I feel, for so many reasons, including the weekend itself. The draft was great - you can watch it here (you'll likely want to start 38 minutes in) or [tumblr.com profile] icing-on-the-rink has put together some twitter highlights. [personal profile] sobsister commented at the game that Chu does so much interaction with everyone on the ice, which is great to watch, and she does. She does that.

Julie Chu has jokes and cheers people on, which is so great. She cheers on her teammates and young players and she's great. I sort of think that she might be living in Montréal now, but there was this year where she was commuting from the States for practice and it was an impressive commute, especially for someone who's not getting paid for this; she's very dedicated. She just seems really lovely all-around. Did you know Julie Chu knows how to crotchet and has been learning French with Anastasia Bucsis?

Anastasia Bucsis is Charline Labonté's girlfriend. Goalie! (Labonté came out after the 2014 Olympics.) There's also a video of Labonté cooking and goofing around and she has a cat who is tiny in it. Labonté was an all-star captain last season, actually, which was great; the ceremonial puck drop in particular was good. There's a nice gif set featuring her and Poulin and Ouellette doing a Hockey Canada event and they're all doing such a great job as role models, I feel; it's lovely. There's a quote from Poulin in there where she talks a bit about the importance of being a good human being off the ice, and, I just, yes. Yes, this is why I love them.

They are dorks, mostly Quebecois dorks. It's awesome. Look at these hats. They wore them to the Winter Classic. There were more hats on the bus to the winter classic. Dorks, dorks with matching hats. They do the crossword. I admit that I am getting progressively lazier with this post, so I present Caroline Ouellette singing.

As far as I can tell they are all lovely and I have mentioned barely any of them, which I feel a bit bad about, but I did mention the laziness. They are great. This weekend they are facing off against Toronto in the playoffs. Toronto has 14 points to Les Canadiennes' 42. Les Canadiennes are undefeated on home ice. (I am pretty sure your team is going down, [personal profile] sobsister.)

If you're around Montréal the 26th-28th you can buy tickets for those games here. The games will stream on the CWHL website and will cost $10 to watch, which is less than a single game ticket and I think will work out to about $2/game. (You can read about scheduling here.) Saturday's Furies vs. Canadiennes game is on Sportsnet 360 at 5pm EST / 2pm PST.

If all goes well Les Canadiennes will face off against either the Calgary Inferno or the Brampton Thunder in Ottawa on the Senators' ice on Sunday March 13th. (Tickets are available here for $20.) That's the first weekend of March Break for a lot of elementary school kids here and it sounds like a pretty good way to start it off.

I am so excited about the playoffs, and also anxious. Go Les Canadiennes Go!

Happy Lupercalia

the moon's my teacher by [archiveofourown.org profile] driedvoices
Summary: Lydia resurrects another dead werewolf. At least this one buys her dinner.
Rating: PG-13 | 11,462 words | Erica/Lydia

I love Lydia in this. I love how strong she is in the face of feeling so vulnerable and I love the relationship that develops between her and Erica - it doesn't exist at all to begin with, not really, and then it's this fragile new thing that develops further. There's all of this growth in the fic and the character interactions are awesome.

Here to Hold on To by [archiveofourown.org profile] lady_ragnell
Summary: A chance meeting in the hospital the morning after Laura kills Peter leaves Laura with a telepathic connection to a teenager she'd never met before--one who, after she finds out about werewolves, wants the bite.
Rating: PG-13 | 14,812 words | Erica/Laura

This is really great. The tension between her and Erica is believable and pretty non-creepy. Erica is so much herself and Laura's feeling her out - this person suddenly in her head who wants to be a werewolf - and sorting out the business of being Alpha in Beacon Hills and I am just so much a fan of her chugging on and being an adult. I feel like this is how the story should have gone down.

November Pink by [archiveofourown.org profile] MissLouisa
Summary: Cora can barely remember what it's like to do the proper family thing - she moved around from pack to pack for the years she was missing, like an unwanted foster child, and she's experienced Thanksgiving and Christmas with families, but they haven't been her own family in a long long time.
Somehow, Cora and Derek end up hosting Thanksgiving for Lydia and the Stilinskis.
Rating: PG-13 | 3,580 words | Cora/Lydia

This fic is full of tentative relationships just starting to be built and it is really lovely for that. It's sweet and kind of awkward. I like the relationship between Cora and Derek a whole lot; they try with each other but are both pretty reserved, it's an interesting dynamic. The relationships in this are pretty satisfyingly realistic.

until the moon gives you back by [archiveofourown.org profile] fightingtheblankpage
Summary: After her brother's death, and after killing her own uncle, Laura doesn't have much reason to stay in control over herself. She spends years roaming the woods around her house, and forgetting who she was before. Then, one day, Lydia Martin buys the old Hale house on a whim. Lydia wants to be left alone. Laura wants to have a pack again.
Rating: G | 14,872 words | Laura/Lydia

This is a deliciously tropey AU with a near feral Laura reaching out to Lydia. It is basically exactly what you would expect to read based on its summary and it could benefit from a beta but it's kind of great. It has people feeling alone and disconnected, slaughtered offerings, head-pats and cuddles, and, of course, a dramatic showdown. It's fun.

Summary: I'll blow your mind.

Ladies playing baseball. If you haven't seen this movie you really need to (because, like me, you need a crush on Geena Davis, obviously); it's about women and gender and baseball and it's funny and heart-wrenching and everything. There's actually some m/f in this vid, but I so completely do not care about it that I feel fine reccing this in my female relationships only month; it's pretty incidental. It's a vid about women being awesome together. It's glorious.

Do My Thing by [personal profile] such_heights
Bend It Like Beckham | 3:30 | Song: "Do My Thing" by Estelle ft. Janelle Monáe
Summary: Jess knows just where she's going.

I'm pretty sure if I were an animated character I would have heart-eyes, watching this vid; it is everything that I could want it to be. I love it. It's about Jess doing her thing and is perfectly femslashy. The femslash narrative in this vid is great.

Wood and Weasley, sitting in a tree

[personal profile] sinesofinsanity prompted me to write a post on "minor character(s) that stood out to you. Was there ever a minor character that you invented a backstory or future or side adventure for because you needed/wanted to see more of them than was ever intended to be in canon?"

Oliver Wood.

Allow me to tell you about how he and Percy Weasley are married with children.

We'll start at the beginning. You know how Oliver and Percy are the only two male Gryffindors mentioned in their year in the books? You know how they're captain of the quidditch team and head boy. Leadership qualities, both of them, I am saying. I feel like they would have kind of got each other.

...and then you had the films come out and I feel that it was made very clear just how well those two fell into some base fannish predilections, shall we say? Ooh, Oliver, you're so Scottish and athletic and adorable. and Ooh, Percy, you're slender and ginger and bookish and here to enforce the rules... yes, please so there's actually a decent amount of fic that got written for these two.

...and that's fine, all of that is fine and totally normal, and I read in a fair number of Harry Potter ships. There were so many characters in that series and it was essentially a game in fandom to ship everyone with everyone and everything. I have a lot of HP ship feels in a lot of different directions because of that.

...and then the seventh book came out. It was the final piece of canon, a lot of ships got sunk in that - in that they're never going to be canon possibly because someone died - and some you know, happened. I haven't actually read the final book since it came out, but, I kind of remember Percy and Oliver showing up at the final battle together. (Clearly Oliver helped Percy pull his head out of his ass.) ...and then they both survive the final battle, which is great. No one in this ship dies. Amazing. ...and then a funny thing happens in the epilogue: "Harry thought he heard Percy discoursing loudly on broomstick regulations..."

Clearly this means that Percy and Oliver end up together. There is no other reasonable explanation, obviously. The SCUSA ship name is Bedknobs & Broomsticks, okay?

So, yeah, I have historically thought about that a bit and how that would have gone down, and I think it is a damn shame that Rowling apparently never did, because I feel it would have been so easy for her to explicitly write about a Wood-Weasley or Weasley-Wood kid and that there would have been a lot of triumphant fists raised if she did. ...as it was, it was just me, basically, I sort of feel, and some of my fellow shipmates, and we are not, proportionally, a really big part of the whole of HP fandom.

This ship, I am telling you. I feel like a lot of the fic for it is pretty fanon, but: Percy Weasley spends a lot of the books being kind of a pompous ass and trying so hard to follow the rules and succeed and Oliver Wood is a reasonably chill dude but Quidditch-obsessed and a bit tactless. How can you not want to toss all of that at each other? They would get each other. They would be good for each other. They would be beautiful and hilarious and Oliver would be so into Percy's broomstick regulation discourse.

So into it.

Have you seen...?

[personal profile] lucifuge5 prompted me with "A media (book, movie, etc.) that you like reccing to people all the time." This is probably Slings & Arrows for me, just because it feels like such a solid rec to make to a lot of different people. It's smart, earnest, and funny.

You're into Canadiana? Hoo boy. So it's about a theatre festival that bears a striking similarity to Stratford; it's amazing. Jackie Burroughs is in it. Sarah Polley. Paul Gross. \o/ You know, the mountie from Due South, yeah, he's the lead. Ranger Gord from Red Green is in it. Colm Feore. Sean Cullen. Rachel McAdams. William Hutt is in it. Seriously, it's like - anytime you find yourself walking through any kind of photo collection of people in Canadian theatre, you are going to be finding someone from this show, possibly multiple someones. It's a delight.

You like theatre? This is a love letter to the theatre. It's about the Stratford Festival, and each season of the show is a season at the theatre and they focus on two productions that they're putting on - so you get to see them performing bits of Shakespeare and having meta discussions about that performance and talking to the stage manager and about ticket sales and funding and all of these different details, and some of it's pretty cynical. But there's also theses little moments where the show goes there, right there, that's why the theatre is magic, that's why we're doing this it's great.

I'm Canadian and like the arts. Those are the two pitches that tend to come up the most.

It's three seasons of six episodes. The season arcs are well structured. They play with themes really well.

I requested it for yuletide a few years back.

Paul Gross is having a ball in this series, that is something that is so evident watching it. He spends a fair amount of time arguing with a ghost that only he can see. There are amazing characters in this. People feel incredibly, incredibly real - wonderful and awful in such mundane, human ways.

The series is made up of so many moments, so many things big and small, that I am in love with. The first performance they put on of Macbeth. Maria, drunk and surly at a party. Anna, wounded and strong. Ellen, happily dating young things. Darren Nichols, adjusting his scarf. Geoffrey, putting on a show.

I love it, so I recommend it.
