On J.K. Rowling's TERF-dom

When I learned that J.K. Rowling was a TERF it didn't have a big impact on my life. The only fact I've ever particularly liked about J.K. Rowling is that she apparently pays her taxes, which is, really, such a low bar for someone to meet. Her media persona and the narrative of her writing the books that was put out didn't grab me. I wasn't a fan of hers.

When Donald Trump was elected in 2016 I stayed up into the early hours of the morning, drinking wine and Skyping with a friend of a similar level of investment and an increasing amount of despair as the evening wound down. Next day's morning transit felt isolating, funereal, but as that day and all of the days progressed there was this thing that kept happening: people would make asides and vent.

Things sure are happening.

The Saskatchewan government invoked the notwithstanding clause to pass their Parents' Bill of Rights a week ago. There were nation-wide anti-LGBTQ2SIA+ rallies that Saturday, and also No Space For Hate rallies. OPSEU (Ontario Public Service Employees Union) put out a pretty good events round-up during the organisational period, so they may be a space to watch if you're in Ontario and not linked up to your local group yet. The way things are going I'm sure we'll be out again with our rainbow kit before long.

I went to a parade this summer where I ended up pretty close to some noisy anti-gay come-to-Jesus types - which really shifted that parade experience into attempting to build a protective wall of sound for the other attendees rather than just being at the parade - and then I came home and realised that I wanted a vid playlist for Pride that I didn't have. This is it.

+ So one of the things that this vid has gifted me is the knowledge that this film exists: it's a film about a queer Muslim man, set during Ramadan, who brings a boy home, and there's a HEA. There are some great shots of food, and people enjoying food. There's also a wonderful tension in this vid: there's music and feelings and mistakes and ridiculous gestures and the best *chinhands*-inducing ending scene.

Conservation Webinars I watched in May

North American Firefly ID Course (May 1-3, 2023 | Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation)
I enjoyed this! I'm always down for people to tell me about their specialty and I learned a whole bunch about the fireflies in my area and also the world, a bit. Oliver Keller, who works with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, delivered the course and he's a systematics and taxonomy guy which was fun because it translated into having really up to date phylogenetic trees. He was a bit more oral-based than I generally like and could have done a better job in giving his audience a solid basis in insect fundamentals, but I know all of this stuff about fireflies now and have a folder full of journal papers. He's also one of those dudes that is like - hit me up for scientific journals - which is really generous and something that I really appreciate because scientific publishing is like a vampire's castle. He used a lot of his own photos for this, which meant that sometimes the visual aids skewed tropical, which was neat from a diversity perspective.
The talk was set up as a three day training course for people interested in getting involved in the Xerces Society's Firefly Atlas, which is a global project, but is just launching and so has a very USA-centric focus since that's where they're based - the third day of talks was just key American firefly species that are very cool and also don't occur in Canada at all. One of the neat things about the project that sets it apart from the existing citizen science projects is the ability to upload videos, which is really useful in firefly identification because of how specific their flash patterns are. I'm excited about it.

Dramas that I have, somehow, finished

Thirteen! Thirteen dramas that I have finished since covid hit, and have remembered - full-stop, and also sufficiently well to have some grasp of the ending. (There is at least one drama that I definitely watched all of, but I can tell you nothing about the ending; I have emotionally bonded and remembered that part of it, not at all.) So: these are the dramas that I have watched recently(-ish) that I have found compelling. They are basically entirely(?) absurd romantic comedies because I have been leaning hard into the escapism these past few years, and also because: I like a romance, I like a comedy, and I like some crack treated seriously. Some of them are less comedic or absurd than others.

It's Victoria Day weekend here - the official unofficial launch of summer. People put their plants in the ground, open up their cottages, fire up their barbeques, and crank up their radio equivalents. It's often a weekend of being awash in your neighbours' music and the smell of charcoal.
