There's cake.
Apr. 7th, 2009 12:52 pmAfter Vermont's Senate approved the gay marriage bill in a 26-4 vote Governor James Douglas announced his intention to veto the bill if it passed through the House of Representatives. It did, in a 95-52 vote, an outcome just three votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to nullify the Governor's veto right.
As you might expect, he received rather a lot of mail on this issue from supporters of both sides. Issuing the veto on Monday, he was praised for his courage. I find this intriguing.
The bill went back to the House of Representatives today to seek a two-thirds majority: it got it. It cleared the Senate 23-5, and the House of Representatives 100-49.
Vermont is the first State to pass it through the legislature.
Yes.
Also: The cake is not a lie. I made some last night, and it is full of promise.
ETA: D.C. Council just voted to recognise other states' gay marriages. Unanimously.
