So, I have a question: What do I need to do to lure you into a fandom? (I would like detailed instructions.)

Relatedly, what kinds of fic do you like to read? What do you look for in a story? What are your kinks- elements that draw you to stories?

(I was on the bus with this question, and ended up drafting this ridiculous request for soulbond fic at

kradamadness. Among my story ideas I am currently particularly proud of, in ascending order, "the one where they are trees", "the one where they are crime-fighting rabbit shape-shifters linked by destiny and a telepathic bond", and "that Valdemar AU where they are like, 'What. You are not a horse.'"* I would totally read these, is the thing.

*This is totally how Valdemar works, right? I am not misremembering?)

So, assorted fannish things that are making me happy:

Front page of the Toronto Star today. First paragraph of the main article: "She likes us. She really likes us." (Article: "Kate tips hat to Canada; For a royal with no official remarks, she still makes a statement.") Seriously. (Does anyone else remember that time the CBC made Obama a mixed tape of Canadian music?) I was talking to someone about Hetalia and Scandinavia and the World and personification of countries - and just- Canada is sometimes a lovelorn teenager, eh? (Seriously- the article* is a clothing analysis and about how the fascinator she wore on Canada Day is a sign.)

I saw X-Men! When I left the theatre I had Fandom stuck in my head. I started cycling through vids internally and there was giggling, and just- Fandom is awesome sometimes. I hadn't expected to like it as much as I did, but it was kind of slashtastic and amazing.

I also saw Thor! It was a silly film. I went in knowing about Loki/Thor and ended up shipping Darcy/Jane. (Where is the Darcy/Jane fic? WHERE?)

Also: Bandom. Ahahahaha. So I have been plotting a recruitment post for a while, and there are something like 3-4 Bandom posts that I want to make, but I am digresssing slightly. Part of the appeal of Bandom for me, is that there exists within it a question which has only one possible answer. The question is "Who is this bouncy young man?"** and the answer is "Brendon Urie." He decided to strip at a show recently; for some reason I find this hilarious right now.

*Read: glorified caption to justify running a giant photo of her and her fascinator on the front page
**No, it seriously is. I have seen this in a couple of places now.

There's a particularly wonderful piece of plagiarism asshattery that's gone down. An editor put plagiarised web content in a for-profit publication, was called on their error and then made an ass of themselves. The Smart Bitches article is pretty good for details and links about this. They've also a google-bombing campaign for Judith Griggs.

Today's xkcd is an updated map of online communities; dreamwidth is on it. So. That is exciting.

Okay. So. I went to see Kick-Ass last night and it was, indeed, kick-ass. (If you want to see it when you come visit me,

readbystarlight, I am pretty sure I am up for another go-around.) It was just, comic book violence and so, so, kiddie. It's set in New York, which was awesome, because part of the way through I'm going This is totally filmed in Toronto, isn't it? The stuff they could get away with, anyway. and I was right. At one point they run past a building with a Canadian and an Ontario flag. It was awesome.

I mean, there was stuff I didn't like, but shiny and explosions and ridiculousness. It was adorable. I was less terrified of Nicholas Cage than usual. I stayed to the end so that I could listen to Mika's song in the credits (his music video for it is similarly adorable and fun, by the way) and made random flaily motions at the Toronto credits as a sort of strange expression of residual excitement, thus possibly confusing the full third of the audience that stayed with me. (This is an estimate; there were like seven of us in the theatre for the showing, and the third guy missed part of the credits and then came back, so it is possibly accurate.) I had a lot of fun, and it was awesome in that despite the audience size I wasn't the only one giggling at things.

I am issuing an invitation for requests. You’re invited to tell me what you would like to see posted, what would serve you.

This journal tends to be pretty fannish in content, so you’re welcome to make requests in that vein. If you don’t have any specific requests, or even if you do, I’d love to hear about your experiences – what you love or what kind of fannish content you’re consuming/producing right now.

Essentially what I mean to be asking is this: what would you like to magically appear among your reading material?

It doesn’t have to be fannish. You could ask for music or a recipe for vegan banana bread or information about the development of a literary genre or online academic journals or math and science jokes or pictures of things that are orange or an entry about unicorns. If nothing comes to mind, or even if it does, you could give me a list of five or so things you’re passionate about.

If there’s something you want explained or if you have a question: ask away. This is essentially intended as a free-for-all and you’re welcome to be as verbose or issue as many requests as you like.

I’m not guaranteeing that all requests will be filled. This is kind of the bastard child of a request for journal feedback, a getting-to-know-you meme, and a wish-list festival.

People who don’t regularly post here are welcome to do so and participate in this. (New people are exciting!)

Given that, while I have hidden depths and also mad research skills, there are still some requests that will fall outside of my capabilities you’re welcome to fill a request if it calls to you. It would be kind of awesome, actually, and I suspect there would be more joy in the world for it.

This is the Yeshiva* AU, as such, it's essentially set in a universe I know next to nothing about. [The location is not incidental to the story, so I spent a fair bit of my time reading this being kind of fascinated at the religious parts of the story, (religion is a thing of great mystery to me) and that culture. I got something that I hadn't before.] It works really well.

It's a very cute and happy and wonderful little story. There is a dragon in it, which endears it to me to no end. It's all so wonderfully sweet and there are these utterly charming little bits of humour threaded throughout.
