"R.E.M. did this so much better," Lorelai says, and Rory kind of has to agree.
This is Gilmore Girls post season six at the end of the world. It's stark and just about exactly how the zombie apocalypse would go down in Stars Hollow. It begins quietly and cloaked in pop culture references and becomes progressively more devastating. It feels very real, like if Gilmore Girls hadn't been so firmly entrenched in its genre it could have gone to this place.

The Philadelphia Story
Rating: PG | 3,709 words | Macaulay Connor
Summary: The Philadelphia Story ends with a wedding. What if it picked up again with a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?
This is a story that was written for me for yuletide 2010* and it is perfect. (Almost three years later it still makes me grin ridiculously.) It is exactly what its summary says it is. It's kind of adorable. The characterisation is excellent. Some of the lines in this are hilarious and the whole thing is a delightful romp.

Scooby Doo
Rating: R | 1,068 words | Velma Dinkley
The infestation gets worse and worse. They need to resupply, low on food and gas and bullets, and maybe find somewhere to sleep that's a little more comfortable than the back of the van, but every time they stop, every time it's quiet enough Velma feels relatively safe getting out of the van, they're ambushed.
I love the tone of this piece. I love the way Velma is holding herself together, is keeping on in the face of so much loss and destruction. I've read this story aloud and there are a few places where my voice catches, where a voice is meant to catch or trail off and start again; the way this story is written is so in synch with the story that's told. It's great.
*I got another zombie story for yuletide this past year, but I had already laid out the bones of this rec set and somehow zombies at the BBC don't feel at all unexpected to me. (That story is Never Mind the Bite Marks by
freneticfloetry - it's Never Mind the Buzzcocks RPF.)
