What is this thing?

Never Mind the Buzzcocks is something that I talk about occasionally and get weirdly excited about.

Wikipedia says this about it:"The show is noted and known for its dry, sarcastic humour and scathing, provocative attacks on the music industry. It has also had some controversial guests throughout its 13-year run."

It's a comedy!panel!game!show! There's a host - whose function is to run things, and mock the guests - and two teams of three. Each team has a captain, who, like the host, is usually a regular - they deliver final answers to the host and tend to ensure that things run smoothly. The guests of the show are generally comedians and musicians, often using the show as a promotional opportunity.

The show is divided into rounds in which the teams attempt to answer questions about pop music and musicians. They are awarded points for correct answers.

I still have no idea what this thing is.

It's like a combination of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, a talk show, a pub quiz, listening to the radio, and watching children taunting each other on a play set.

...

Simon Amstell, who has hosted the show since 2006 apparently announced his planned departure a few month ago - Dammit Amstell! - via his mailing list:

"Here is some news, should you be interested in this sort of thing. I will not be hosting another series of the fun pop quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

"When I first took on the role, my only hope was to bring joy and laughter to the world and if I was lucky, put an end to war, disease and poverty. Now that I have achieved that, I plan to concentrate on my live work.

"Thank you. Please now continue to enjoy your life as best you can."

The tone of this is very characteristic of him, and hosting Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Are there any episodes I might be interested in seeing?

Yes.

You may be interested in watching episodes based on who the guest panelists are.

Season 22, Episode 11 Guests: Josh Groban, Martin Freeman, Omid Djalli, Grant Nicholas, and Heston Blumenthal.
(Josh Groban's the guy that sings You Raise Me Up and he's kind of ridiculously charming and amusing. I think I spent most of my time watching this episode in a sort of euphoric shock at that.)

Season 5, Episode 4 Guests: Billie Piper, Nick Keynes, Meat Loaf, and Rowland Rivron.
(Billie is so young in this, it's kind of fascinating, and there are some very charming and amusing people in this episode)

Season 22, Episode 2 Guests: Dominic Cooper, Stephen Fry, Matt Schultz, Josie Long, and Frankie Sandford.
(Stephen Fry is Stephen Fry and Jupitus and Amstell are attempting to out-trivia him.)

Season 19, Episode 5 Guests: John Barrowman, Kelli Young, Robin Ince, and Daniel Bedingfield.
(John Barrowman is a tart.)

...did you mention this in connection with SGA fic once?

Yes. There exists in my head a McShep AU in which McKay is the host and Sheppard a Team Captain.

This is likely a result of the following:

sardonicsmiley's Late Night 101 in which Rodney hosts a late night talk show in which he is scathing.

[livejournal.com profile] lavvyan's But Wait, There's More! in which John and Rodney present a home shopping program together and there is on-camera flirting.

John's guitar and Johnny Cash obsession and Rodney's once playing the piano.

Season 21, Episode 4 (Guests: Bobby Davro, Richard Fleeshman, Leon Meya, Kristen Schaal.) in which the panels revolt against Amstell with their buzzers, there is interpretive dance, people are charming, and hair and points are mocked.

Just... Sheppard would so be all slouchy and insolent and McKay would make fun of his hair, and there'd be bantering and geeking and mocking other people and stuff.

...what?

Never Mind the Buzzcocks is an amusing show. You should check it out.
