It's a short article by Jared Diamond, published in the late eighties in Discover. It's a very interesting idea; what if moving from hunter-gatherers to agriculturalists wasn't a progressive step, but rather a complete misstep?

I first read it for a class a number of years ago and then shortly after was reading an earlier text in which the other argument (or paradigm, if you will) was presented and they quoted and referenced Diamond. (I find this very interesting just as an example of how someone's thinking process can lead them to different conclusions at different times, or at least to write different conclusions, at any rate.)
