Feb. 27th, 2011 08:00 pmI apparently have this thing where I think that Harry Potter original characters are piles of fun. I like the kind of sprawling nature of that fandom, I think, how much love people have for the 'verse and their desire to fill in all the bits, sometimes with themselves. So, art recs (Again! More! Forever! ...probably not.):
Durmstrang student by Ninidu
I really like the colours in this and the utter casualness of her pose. I have very vague memories of the Durmstrang students that go something like "We are from the north. We are very... northern. Arr. I seem to have broken your razor; so terribly sorry." so I'm quite taken by how lovely this girl is and am simultaneously sure that she could destroy all her enemies. I like her. I like how practical and comfortable her uniform is and how much she seems at ease in it and in general; I like how much herself she seems.
The Gryffindor Girls by aprikose-fanart
This piece is a lot of fun and comes off something like a mix between glamour and candid photos, like this is what happened when someone wandered around the common-room with a muggle camera and later they just pasted it all together. I love all of the touches that place this in the 70s-- the hair and the ever so fantastic school jackets. I am also quite fond of the scarf and the wallpaper background. (I have yet to run into background wallpaper that I didn't like, or, for that matter, a long scarf.) I like the details (the blonde's flowers, the nail-polish) and the expressions; they're kind of wonderful.
Harry Potter: OC Olivia Greys by WackelP
I think that Olivia just might be my favorite; she rolls her eyes at your shenanigans, hard. Her expression pretty much endears her endlessly to me. I also really like her freckles and her nose and her face and her hair and that little clip in it. (Accessories are key, I tell you.) I like all of those little variations within a uniform, that Olivia pins her hair out of her face and wears tights instead of knee-highs or some-such. I love that her Hogwarts sweater is frumpy (It brings me a kind of ridiculous amount of joy.) from being too long and that her skirt follows from not being neatly pressed. I think she squirrels away in forgotten corners of the castle and reads in interesting positions.

Okay, so this is blatant self-insert art and it is fantastic and adorable. It's "We are witches, and we have awesome hats. Also: I am witty and delightful." The hats are indeed awesome and I love the scene, how very clearly this is a meeting of fangirls. It's familiar, everyone just happening to have glasses and the hilarity and recording of things. I really like the background, how there's a comfortable yellow centred on them and the painted-on quality of the letters. It's a wonderful celebration of geekery.
