Title: Adventure.exe
Rating: PG-13
Length: 13 songs, 48:10
Pairing: Adam/Kris
Summary: It's a love story about getting to a place where you're ready to have a relationship with someone and ready to take that risk.

I started off calling this The Toronto AU because almost writing snow into a ficlet, and then accidentally setting it in Toronto anyway, is what made me start making it. That's really not what this is, though; it's not the Toronto AU. You could write it that way, but it's not really about Toronto, and the first two songs to make it onto this mix and that the mix grew around along with the love story weren't by bands from there. Along with the narrative there are also these recurring themes and elements that I didn't seek out, but happened because of the type of story I was trying to tell and because part of that was telling it with Canadian artists.

The story starts after a break-up, a bad one (Oh Yeah) and then there's not wanting to get hurt and shutting things down (Robots & Save Your Scissors) and waiting (Quiet) and then kind of straining against things and yearning (Adventure.exe & My Favourite Chords) and then getting a bit more frantic with that yearning (This City's a Mess) until there's a turning point or a discovery (Lovely Allen) and then rising action and a weighing of things, consideration (Mutiny, I Promise You & Heart of the City) before there's a resolution come to and a willingness to take risks (Walk on the Moon) and then there's being decided, wanting, and anticipation (I Want You) and excitement about the future (Sunday Morning). It's about connections and getting to a place where you're ready to have a relationship with someone.

It's set in Canada, is a little about living in a city and music, too, and there are some themes that come out of the Canada thing; I think that there might be a bit more of a political bent as things are than there would have been if I'd set about telling this story with US-American artists and I've also got cold and snow showing up in three different songs. k-os could arguably be referring to a less literal cold, but still, I ended up with a chronology and snow - This City's a Mess has snow at Christmas and Heart of the City has it on New Year's Eve. I think climate has a tendency to weave itself into culture and national identity; I think for a good chunk of Canada snow is a thing, however they react to it. This is a story set with that background. (This was an amnesty submission for Snow at kradamadness.)

Special thanks to [personal profile] sinesofinsanity for helping me out with this.

01. Oh Yeah - The Cliks
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I've fallen down
But I can get up

02. Robots - Dan Mangan
And that little voice
In the back of your mind
Just wants you to know
Just hopes that you know

Robots need love, too
They want to be loved by you

03. Save Your Scissors - City and Colour
Just save your scissors
For someone else's skin
My surface is so tough
I don't think the blade will dig in

04. Quiet - Lights
I'm not yours, and you're not mine
But we can sit and pass the time
No fighting wars, no ringing chimes,
We're just feeling fine.

05. Adventure.exe - Final Fantasy
Hey yo yo yo yo yo
I need an empire to overthrow
You make me wish for a more dangerous life
So I can show you 'bout self sacrifice

06. My Favourite Chords - The Weakerthans
I'd like to fall asleep to the beat of you breathing in a room near a truckstop on a highway somewhere. You are a radio. You are an open door. I am a faulty string of blue Christmas lights.

07. This City's a Mess - Said the Whale
Baby with the snow outside
It's just you and me and no one else
Talk about the years gone by
Ain't it such a shame how time flies

08. Lovely Allen - Holy Fuck
(instrumental)

09. Mutiny, I Promise You - The New Pornographers
And here's the mutiny I promised you
And here's the party it turned into
And here's the mutiny I promised you
And here's the moment it turned into

10. Heart of the City - Arkells
And you said, "This could happen for a reason.
How can you not have any faith?
The beauty that surrounds us;
It didn't happen by mistake."

In the heart of the city,
Good hearts will break.
Is this a test to see
How much we can take?

11. Walk on the Moon - Great Big Sea
Don't you think their hands were shaking
As that rocket ship touched down?
I'm sure they shivered
When they finally touched the ground
And the giant leap so fragile that it hardly made a sound
But it must have been amazing
What a world they got to see
So I don't care - my foolish fear won't get the best of me

12. I Want You - Fefe Dobson
I want you
When the sun comes up, I wanna make you mine, I wanna make it count
I want you

13. Sunday Morning - k-os
Everyday is Saturday night
But I can't wait for Sunday morning, Sunday morning
