Hi :) I really like your voice, and it was interesting to hear your take on Bandom ^^ I do get being more of a fandom person than a music fan, although now that I've been hit by the FOB bug I guess I AM in Bandom for the music, too (I also really like MCR...)

Yeah. The fandom has definitely drawn me over to the music side a fair bit. I think the sprawling nature of bandom is good for that; being in bandom made this whole chunk of names familiar for me whenever I go and look at music. I'm more likely to try listening to new to me artists who are in bandom than not.

Basically I read a few Bandom stories then checked out the Bandom primer at crack_van, then made a recs post, then started actually interacting with Bandom fans :)

That at least sounds so organised and like a good way to get into a fandom - with the primer and then the recs. Is that the way you usually get into a fandom?

I can't say... It depends on the kind of fandom. With a TV fandom, I might go looking for stories because I'm into the series. More often than not, I'll check out some stories, then wiki the fandom, and then start checking out the canon, though. If I stumble over recs lists or primers in the "canon exploration phase", I count myself very lucky :) Mh, I usually go for recs lists more than for primers. As for making my own recs list --- I started heavily reccing for Inception when it was still relatively early in the fandom and things were going strong... I also did a Sentinel post shortly after I got into the fandom... I tried to make bigger recs lists for SGA and Stargate SG-1, but it turned out too much work for me...
So yeah, I guess there's a bit of a pattern, but Bandom is only my second RPF fandom, and Supernatural RPF only got interesting for me after I was in Supernatural fandom, so.../ends rambling

That's interesting. If you don't like the canon for whatever reason do you back away from the fandom? (Is that a thing that happens? Not liking the canon?) You mean wikipedia and not fanlore wiki, right? (Also, ooh, you were in SGA? :) I have been so nostalgic for SGA this week for some reason.)

I find big rec lists really intimidating to make. I mean, I love them, and they are massively useful, but they take so long to put together. (Probably if they are a thing you do you develop a system.)

Actually, I've been in many fandoms where I didn't quite like the canon, or at least felt a bit conflicted about it (best example: Supernatural). Actually, I've rarely read fiction for the shows I truly love (Babylon 5, Farscape, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Dark Angel, Buffy tVS & Angel...), but often not for lack of trying! It's just that I came into these fandoms when they were already "old" and I couldn't ride somebody's wave of enthusiasm to find the stories I might like. I often joke with myself that the more mediocre the canon, the more likely I'll fall for the fandom ^^ Probably because fandom fixes things :)
But in the case of Teen Wolf fandom, knowing the canon has made me back away from the fanfic --- mainly because I can't stand Derek. Or the new Bond - I thought Q was the weakest character (and badly acted to boot), so I can't really get into 00Q...
And yes, reclists are SO MUCH WORK. One way of making it easier is to just treat them as masterlists of recs... Reccing one or two things every once in a while, and then collecting them in one post. Delicious/pinboard and such have made these kinds of lists a bit obsolete, though.

Yeah. I sort of feel like there's this combination of incredible potential and failure to fulfill that potential in the canons of big fandoms.

I feel like Teen Wolf fandom is collectively writing this massive AU for the show; they're writing the show they want to be watching.

I think there's something in the formatting of those lists that makes me love them still in spite of the utility of delicious/pinboard.

Oooh listening to you talk about all this was fun! Also, oh man, I love the idea of reading nothing but femslash for a month. (Also clearly I need to find this bandom femslash you speak of because I know hardly ANY.)

I like most of the music of the bandom bands (basically everything that I've listened to I've enjoyed) but it's almost certainly because I like the fandom. Not that any of their music is something I would never,ever listen to otherwise, but it probably wouldn't stand out as quite as YAY AWESOME OMG if it weren't for the fandom behind it. :D

Yeah, having fandom behind the music makes a huge difference for me. I remember listening to a TAI CD and the music did nothing for me, but I had this giant grin on my face the whole time I was listening to it because, hee, TAI.
