DCU | 4:06 | R | Cassandra Cain & Harleen Quinzel
Summary: Harley Quinn attempts Teshuvah. The good thing about Teshuvah being a process is that you can do it more than once.
Music: Bird on a Wire by k.d. lang
+ Footage from the Birds of Prey film. All of the messiness of being human and trying to sort everything out, with violence and sparkles and friendship. The song choice for this vid is pretty magic: k.d. lang is a great tonal fit for this Harley Quinn, and the lyrics and cadence shine through. It's gloriously cinematic.
a strange pair by
turquoisetumult
The Fall | 2:48 | G | Alexandria & Roy Walker
Summary: "are you trying to save my soul?"
Music: Experience by Ludovico Einaudi
+ This made me cry. The Fall is a gorgeous film and then this is: like, all of its punches, dialogue included. Dramatic and lovely.
Mass in B Minor
purplefringe
Good Omens | 3:09 | G
Summary: A vid examining the theological arguments, biblical concepts and questions of morality represented in Good Omens.
Music: Mass in B Minor by J. S. Bach
+I really love the ambition of this vid, and how Bach is used to highlight the grandiose nature of the plan, of the Christian mythos, and serve as a contrast to the tone of the book and miniseries. It's a clever distillation of the work focused on the two main religious characters, with some fantastic tongue-in-cheek.
Little Numbers by
Rhea
Hikaru no Go | 3:40 | G | Shi Guang/Yu Liang
Summary: These numbers could be lucky for you.
Music: Little Numbers by BOY
+So there's a live action TV adaptation of this that exists now that's the source for this vid. It's great. I only know Hikaru no Go through being a person who has existed in fandom for a number of years and my knowledge is patchy, but this vid fills me with delight. It is the story of estranged childhood friends/rivals(?) to lovers, and it's sweet and adorable and full of tension and light.
Gänseblümchen by
Rhea
The King: Eternal Monarch | 3:18 | G | Kang Sin Jae
Summary: Es war schon wieder so ein Morgen | It was another one of those mornings
(Or the Sin-jae just really needs a hug vid)
Music: Gänseblümchen by Ganz Schön Feist
+I don't know this source, didn't know this song, and have very little German. None of this stopped this from becoming one of my favourite vids this winter. (Turn on the subtitles and watch this vid.) There is something incredibly satisfying to me about the lyrics "I'm a daisy in the sunshine and through my petals the sun is flowing into me" paired with scenes of frustration and resignation and happiness.
Run Away With Me by
sisabet and
sweetestdrain
Legend of Fei | 4:11 | G | Xie Yun/Zhou Fei
Summary: Xie Yun has a proposal.
Music: Run Away with Me by Carly Rae Jepsen
+ They are in love. Historical costume drama (including swords) set to CRJ's saxophone-laden pop. The title card is perfect and the whole thing is a joy to watch. The alternate blurb is this: "I have no ambition. Neither for literary nor military achievement. I only want to be a maid brushing my future wife's hair."
Jenny by
seekingferret
Macdonald Hall | 2:47 | G | Cathy/Diane
And I sank my face into your hair/ And then I inhaled as deeply as I possibly could
Music: Jenny by Erin McKeown
+ Cute and kind of perfectly summed up by the keyhole heart at the end.
Banshee by
CherryIce
Marvel | 3:44 | G |Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, Peter Benjamin Parker, Peter Parker, May Parker, Peni Parker, Peter Porker, Peter B. Parker, Aaron Davis
Summary: I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape.
Music: Banshee by Santigold
+ Made me grin from the outset. The music is a perfect match for the animation style and the vid uses it to hit heavy emotional beats while also embracing its joy. There are so many excellent sequences in this.
Good Girls by
helcinda
Marvel | 2:13 | G | Xu Xialing
Is it easier when you don't have to start again?
When you don't wanna make amends?
I want to know that feeling
Music: Good Girls by Chvrches
+ There are a lot of really great emotional things happening in this vid that I don't understand because I haven't seen Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings yet. Little sister figure becomes a warrior, grows up, deals with loss, and becomes the centre of their story, maybe? It's pretty.
Balance by
absternr
Nirvana in Fire | 2:36 | G | Liyang
Summary: Liyang, her family, and her choices.
Music: Balance by Dessa
+ Gorgeously woven epic. The pacing of this and the ending are arresting.
A Shot in the Dark by
Krim
Only Murders in the Building | 2:27 | PG-13
Summary: Three residents of a ritzy New York City apartment building form an unlikely alliance (and friendship) to solve a murder in their building
Music: The Pink Panther Theme by Henry Mancini
+ (Yet more source material I haven't seen.) A fun and fitting exploration of the tone of the show, I think.
Stray Italian Greyhound by
periru3
Our Flag Means Death | 4:09 | G | Ed/Stede
Summary: This feeling calls for everything that Ed is not
Music: Stray Italian Greyhound by Vienna Teng
+ Made me *chinhands*.
Power in Union by
condnsdmlk
Pride | 2:51 | G
Summary: It all amounts to nothing if together we don't stand.
Music: Power in a Union by Billy Bragg
+ Anthemic. Friendship and resistance. A sharply focused pro-union vid that captures what the thing is about, the film, unions, and allyship, all.
Go Boys Go by
BrokenMnemonic
Star Trek | 2:42 | G
Summary: The price of exploration.
Music: The Chemical Workers' Song by Great Big Sea
+ "Everyday you're in this place you're two days nearer death". TOS's redshirts and their many varied ends. Incredibly grounded in the song, lyrics and rhythm, both. Fantastic.
Rebels Rising by
condnsdmlk
Star Wars | 2:51 | G
Summary: Rebel. Resist.
Music: The Phoenix by Fall Out Boy
+ Space lasers, rebellion, and death. War. (Fast-paced and shiny.)
All Star by
hartknyx
Taskmaster RPF | 3:32 | G
Summary: The tasks start coming and they don't stop coming.
Music: All Star by Smash Mouth
+ Featuring every contestant of the first 12 series and many visually-rendered lyrics. (e.g. "her finger and her thumb in the shape of an L on her forehead". Always satisfying.) Dancing! Victory! Failure! Smashing things! Exploding things! Music! Sport! Greg Davies' shiny gold head! Et cetera! Fun.
try your best by
hartknyx
Taskmaster RPF | 3:49 | G
Summary: The triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of British comedy.
Music: Fix You by Coldplay
+ Gloriously dramatic. The show's slow pans of failures, crying, so much crying, and lying on the ground, contrasted with all of the victory arms and shots that made it, triumph writ high.
Fight For It by
runawaynun
Ted Lasso | 3:37 | G
Summary: I'm gonna stand here and fight with you.
Music: Fight For It by Lucy Spraggan
+ Such a good pick-me-up vid. Masking pain and solidarity and small triumphs and deciding to dance. Choosing to stand with other people, finding your people, supporting them and being supported. How the shit never goes away, but friendship and believing in people help over and over again.
Let Love Be Your Energy by
such_heights
Ted Lasso | 3:28 | G
Summary: 'He thinks he's mad now, wait til we win him over.' 'He'll be furious!'
Music: Let Love Be Your Energy by Robbie Williams
+ Sports, Ted Lasso, winning people over, and accepting the mission. (I'm still processing this vid.)
Rainbow Connection by
lilly_the_kid
Wilby Wonderful | 2:40 | G | Dan Jarvis/Duck McDonald
Summary: When I wanna see my future, I just look into your eyes.
Music: Rainbow Connection by Garfunkel and Oates
+ The Dan/Duck storyline: really cute in places, and fragile and yearning. This vid is very grounded in the time of the film, with the song choice, especially, and is about some of the realities of being queer at that time, the fear and the lack of status. (On the content warning front: mind the "suicidal thoughts" tag; it goes a bit beyond that.)
DCU | 4:06 | R | Cassandra Cain & Harleen Quinzel
Summary: Harley Quinn attempts Teshuvah. The good thing about Teshuvah being a process is that you can do it more than once.
